Developing our managers for internal career progression in Serco Asia Pacific

The Serco Asia Pacific ‘Emerge’ programme comprises nine-months of accelerated development for future leaders, gathering high potential managers from across our businesses in Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong. The 24 participants in the 2018 cohort included a Senior Recruitment Advisor, Electronics Engineer, Business Process Analyst, Senior Weapons Technician, Senior Psychologist and a Software Developer.

The programme focuses on developing new and existing skills, acquiring broader knowledge of Serco and our strategic priorities, non-technical and behavioural competency growth and building networks. Unique interventions include psychometric assessment and development planning, strategy workshops, operational site visits and mentoring from senior leaders, as well as participation in team challenges sponsored by members of the Divisional Executive Management Team.

In 2018 the team challenges focused on: exploring options for a Divisional subcontractor management system; creating a Mental Health Awareness toolkit for managers; designing a programme in which employees can apply for mentoring from leadership; and building the foundations for a women’s support network in every Serco Asia Pacific site.

Cohort diversity is a key consideration and the selection process is proactively inclusive. 47% of Emerge cohorts to-date have been women.

The Emerge programme has proven both popular and successful. 48% of participants have progressed to new and bigger roles. The manager of cohort members in 2017 and 2018 said: “This is an absolutely amazing opportunity to develop our staff capability and the future leaders of our organisation. I have supported two future leaders into this programme and watched their development with great interest. Joanne [2017 cohort] has been promoted to ‘Manager, Psychological Services and Interventions’ since she completed her Emerge training.”
